Practically everyone has experienced an electrical surge at one time or another. A surge is defined as a fluctuation of voltage, usually causing a rapid, temporary increase in voltage and often followed by a sudden draw or drop in voltage.
Surges in electric voltage levels are quite common and may be caused by many different events. Internal load operations from large appliances such as a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner compressor or other electrical functions caused by appliance operation are common causes of surges. Lightning strikes, faulty wiring and poor grounding are also culprits. Birds, other animals, and tree limbs making contact with power line equipment can cause surges, as well.
Whatever the cause, surges in voltage can cause serious damage and may even destroy expensive equipment in your home or business. As a service to our members, Southern Pine offers for sale devices that help to reduce or, in some cases, eliminate problems caused by fluctuating voltage. Devices available range from outlet plugs to meter socket suppressors. Below is a listing of services and surge suppressor equipment availabe for Southern Pine members:
A. New grounding installation - A check of your existing grounding system will be made free of charge to determine if it is adequate. If needed, the Co-op will install a new ground rod, ground wire and ground clamp to the existing service for a fee of $35. Proper grounding at this point is the first line of defense against lightning strikes.
B. Meter socket suppressor - The Co-op will install a meter socket suppressor on 200-320 amp meters for a fee of $125. This is the second line of defense against lightning surges and the first line of defense against all other external surge types.
C. Multiple Plug Specialty Suppressors:
-
Ten outlet Multimedia Power Strip - $68.00
(This plugs into an existing outlet and in return provides protection for up to ten different items.)
-
Two-outlet Suppressor - $50
-

These seven devices are easily installed by the homeowner. Simply plug them into an existing 120-volt, grounded receptacle (wall plug) and this in turn becomes a surge protection point for whatever may be plugged into the device.
The charges for A & B may be added to your power bill and paid on a monthly basis. At your request, a member services representative will be glad to come to your home and test the effectiveness of your ground rod and help you determine which devices are best suited to protect your home.
