Have you ever heard of Ground Fault Circuit Interruptors (GFCI)? They are fast-acting circuit breakers that cut off power in less than 1/40 of a second--enough time to save you from getting shocked in the case of an electrical ground fault. If your home doesn't already have GFCIs, they can be installed inexpensively. Most home improvement stores will have exactly what you need.

2007 Generator Safety Tips

Southern Pine Electric Cooperative hopes there is no need to use generators this Hurricane Season. But just in case, here are some important tips to help you safely use your portable generator at all times:
• Never, ever connect a portable generator to your household wiring.
• Never plug a portable generator into a regular household outlet.
• Make certain that your generator is properly grounded.
• The frame of a generator that is not grounded may become energized and contact with the frame could be fatal.
• Never exceed the rated capacity of your generator.
• Carefully read and follow all manufacturer instructions, suggestions and safety precautions.
• Use correctly-sized, heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords when operating a generator.
• Never operate a generator indoors--protect yourself from carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Never refuel a generator while it is still operating.
• Always have a fully charged fire extinguisher nearby.
• Always follow local, state and national fire and electrical codes.

Helping to educate our members and friends about important electrical safety issues is just another way Southern Pine Electric Cooperative is looking out for you.
