Each year Southern Pine Electric Cooperative offers a $1,000 scholarship to one deserving area high school graduate. The scholarship is provided through the Electric Cooperative Foundation Scholarship program that was created by the electric cooperatives of Alabama in 1997.
The purpose of the program is to provide scholarships for post-secondary and vocational education for qualifying high school seniors. Dependents of members of participating cooperatives, such as Southern Pine Electric Co-op, are eligible to apply for the scholarships. This is the only educational program sponsored by the co-op that is open only to dependents of co-op members. This year is the eleventh year that scholarships have been awarded from the fund.
Past winners of the scholarship include: Josh Elliot, W. S. Neal High School, 2001; Rebekah Mize, Flomaton High School, 2002; Derek Wiggins, Excel High School, 2003, Christina Henderson, Escambia Academy, 2004; Tonya Allen, Escambia County High School, 2005; Emily Lloyd, Excel High School, 2006; Sandra Stacey, J. U. Blacksher H. S. 2007; Julia Lymon, Escambia County High School, 2008; Tyler Hockstetler, homeschooler, 2009; Jake Wasdin, Escambia Academy, 2010; Logan Harris Smith, Monroe Academy, 2011; and in 2012, David Willis III of Excel High School. Congratulations to all these excellent scholars!
