Southern Pine - A Touchstone Energy Cooperative
Community Commitment

Trees too large? Proper planting and tree-trimming procedures are necessary to help prevent interruption of electrical service. A service interruption can occur when branches contact power lines. These must be kept a safe distance from all electrical wires. Contact Southern Pine for details on safe distances required.

Get Charged!

Get Charged! is a combined nationwide effort by Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, such as Southern Pine, and the Discovery Channel. It is a unique educational kit focusing on electricity that targets 5th through 9th grade students. The purpose of the program is to provide students with a real-world understanding of power and the purpose of electricity--including what electricity is, how it is generated, how it works and how to use it safely.

Get Charged Program

The kits include poster, videos and CD-ROM, lesson plan for science and social studies curriculum, student activity books and a teachers Resource Guide. The program meets all state and federal requirements for teaching the required electricity unit in junior/middle schools, including the National Science Education Standards. The social studies component tells the story of how and why cooperatives were formed in the United States and discusses their continued importance in today's economy. It also meets the standards of the National Council for Social Studies.

It is widely known that today's schools suffer from serious budget deficits. Southern Pine is owned by those it serves, so it only seems natural that Southern Pine and other co-ops should step in and help provide schools with high-quality learning materials such as Get Charged! that work can work hand-in-hand with existing school materials.
